Tidewater Golf Club is as committed to giving back to the community it calls home as it is to delivering an unforgettable experience to players traveling from across the country to play the acclaimed design.
On October 28, Tidewater will again host the Mentor Cup, a high-profile charity event that links young golfers with mentors to help them navigate life on and off the course. The Mentor Cup, which launched in 2018, is part of the Gene’s Dream Foundation, an organization founded by former Golf Channel star Kelly Tilghman to honor long-time PGA professional Gene Weldon.
Weldon, who passed away in 2017 following a bout with cancer, was dedicated to teaching the game of golf and the values it instills to children. He mentored Tilghman, who grew up in North Myrtle Beach, and Gene’s Dream and the Mentor Cup are her way ensuring the next generation of young golfers have the opportunity to benefit from the game.
LPGA legend Nancy Lopez and social media influencer Roger Steele, whose goal is to #makegolfcool, will join Tilghman at this year’s event, helping raise money and awareness for the foundation.
Tidewater has hosted every edition of the Mentor Cup, an 18-hole event that pairs mentors up with young mentees. In addition to the lifetime benefits of mentorship, everyone gets to enjoy one of South Carolina’s premier public courses while aiding a great cause.
In addition to hosting the Mentor Cup, Tidewater is home to an annual Folds of Honor event that raises money for children of fallen or wounded U.S. service members. The course is a “Top Performer” for FOH, raising more than $25,000 annually and more than $275,000 since the event’s founding.
Tidewater also participates in the Myrtle Beach’s golf community’s “Kids Play Free” program, allowing anyone 16 years of age and under to play for free when accompanied by a paying adult.
Tidewater embraces the game’s ability to build character, raise money and improve the lives in the surrounding community, values it shares with the Gene’s Dream Foundation.
