North Myrtle Beach, S.C. – Tidewater Golf Club, the reigning South Carolina Golf Course of the Year, is one of the Palmetto State’s finest layouts, wowing players with its natural beauty and an experience that has few peers.
Tidewater famously has nine holes play along Cherry Grove Inlet or the Intracoastal Waterway but it takes more than beauty to be ranked among America’s premier courses. The layout’s challenges are varied and here are three holes on the acclaimed design that always deliver big time fun.
Mention the third hole and people immediately think of the stunning views of Cherry Grove, but this 146-yard (all distances from white tees) par 3 would be a treat to play even if water was nowhere in sight. Three cavernous bunkers front a kidney shaped green that has two distinct shelves, creating drama on a tee shot that demands precision. Balls that come to rest on the wrong tier will leave golfers dreaming of a two-putt. This is on the short list of the Myrtle Beach area’s best par 3s.

– Golfers love a good, short par 4 and No. 7 delivers. This 323-yard gem plays slightly uphill and isn’t drivable, assuming your last name isn’t Rahm, but players have a decision to make off the tee. Do you bang away, trying to get as close as possible, or layup to a number you are comfortable with? It’s not an inconsequential decision because a deep-faced bunker where dreams of par go to die fronts a green that runs hard from back to front. The seventh is a blast to play.
– The 16th hole backs up to the Intracoastal but even more than water, this par 5 is defined by elevation change. No. 16 is 521 yards on the scorecard but plays downhill, encouraging players to be aggressive, assuming they find the fairway off the tee. This is a birdie hole but woods and wetlands lurk just off the fairway, introducing a hint of danger
