August at Tidewater: Why Late Summer Golf Is a Smart Play

When most golfers think about planning a trip to the Grand Strand, their minds usually go straight to spring and fall. And while those seasons are certainly known for their ideal temperatures and packed tee sheets, there’s a lesser-known window that offers both excellent playing conditions and incredible valueAugust at Tidewater Golf Club.

Yes, it’s a time when many courses are coming out of summer maintenance, and yes, our greens might look a little different than usual. But if you’re willing to trade a bit of visual perfection for smoother tee sheets, lower rates, and genuinely great golf, then August might just be one of the best times of the year to experience Tidewater.

Let’s break down why.

Course Aerification: A Mid-Summer Must

Like many top-tier golf courses, Tidewater undergoes scheduled aerification each year to maintain healthy, high-performing turf. Our primary round of greens aerification takes place during the first week of August, during which the course is temporarily closed to give our maintenance team the space and time they need to work efficiently and thoroughly.

Aerification involves creating small holes in the putting surfaces to relieve compaction, improve oxygen flow, and promote stronger root systems. It’s a vital process for long-term health — especially in a coastal climate like ours — and allows us to continue delivering the fast, firm greens that Tidewater is known for.

Once the greens are aerified, we topdress them with sand to help smooth out the surface and promote a quicker recovery. This sanding is what gives the greens their distinct look during this time — a bit sandy and lighter in color than usual. But rest assured: the surfaces remain fully playable and improve day by day.

Sandy Greens: A Different Look, Same Great Play

We get it — golfers love a lush, dark green putting surface. It’s the classic look, and it screams pristine. But in August, our greens take on a slightly different appearance due to the sand used during topdressing. Instead of that deep green carpet, you’ll find a surface that’s sandy in color, but smooth in performance.

And here’s the secret: for many players, these conditions actually enhance the putting experience. The sanded surface is firm, quick, and true — rolling beautifully if you’re striking your putts well. You may notice a little grit on the ball or the occasional bounce if you miss the sweet spot, but overall, the greens perform far better than most would expect given the look.

Think of it like a well-maintained links course in the UK — firm, fast, and a bit sandy in spots, but absolutely playable and enjoyable.

By Late August: Fully Recovered, Fully Enjoyable

While the greens are immediately playable once we reopen after aerification, they continue to improve with each passing day. By the end of August, the sand has largely worked its way into the turf, and the surfaces are even smoother and more refined. You’ll still see some areas with sand, but from a playing standpoint, the course is 100% ready.

What’s more, the fairways, rough, and tee boxes remain in peak summer form throughout the month. That lush summer growth paired with Atlantic ocean breezes and marsh-side views makes for a beautiful round of golf, whether you’re here for the first time or returning for another go.

The Weather? Surprisingly Perfect

August in Myrtle Beach might have a reputation for being hot — and it certainly brings summer warmth — but what many don’t realize is just how playable the weather can be. Mornings are breezy and beautiful, especially near the water. Midday brings sunshine and warmth, perfect for golfers who like to soak in the summer vibe. And late afternoons? They’re golden, literally and figuratively — offering lower temperatures, long shadows, and breathtaking sunsets over the marsh.

For players who like to tee it up early or enjoy a twilight round, August delivers in a big way. And with fewer golfers on the course during this stretch, it’s easier to move at your own pace and take it all in.

Lower Rates, Higher Value

One of the biggest reasons August is such a smart time to play Tidewater is the pricing. Because we’re coming out of our scheduled maintenance, we reduce our green fees to reflect the short-term change in green appearance. But what you get in return — coastal views, open tee sheets, smooth fairways, and freshly conditioned greens — makes this a deal that’s hard to beat.

Whether you’re a traveling golfer looking to sneak in one last summer trip, a local wanting a great round without the crowds, or a group planning a late summer getaway, August offers premium value without the premium price tag.

Insider Tip: Book Your Round with Confidence

If you’re on the fence about booking a round in August, here’s a simple tip: Don’t overthink it. The course is in great shape, the greens are rolling better than you’d expect, and the setting is every bit as spectacular as it is during peak season.

Want to maximize your experience? Book a morning or late afternoon round. Pair your golf with a stop at Joey’s Clubhouse Grille before or after — their summer drink specials and laid-back vibe are the perfect addition to your day. And don’t forget to swing by the Golf Shop to check out new arrivals in apparel and gear, often marked down during this time of year.

Come Play the Tide This August

Every course has its rhythm — and at Tidewater, August is a month of quiet strength. It’s a time when the turf is bouncing back, the sun is shining bright, and the golfers who make their way here find a peaceful, rewarding round that leaves them wondering why more people don’t take advantage of it.

Whether you’re looking for a last-minute round, planning your next stay-and-play trip, or just itching to tee it up somewhere scenic and challenging, Tidewater in August delivers.

So book your tee time. Pack a few extra balls. And come experience a different side of Tidewater — one that’s a little quieter, a little sandier, and every bit as unforgettable.
