Tidewater’s Fourth Hole: Is It Myrtle Beach’s Best Par 4?
CHERRY GROVE, S.C. -- As golfers begin planning a spring trip, holes like No. 4 at Tidewater Golf Club, an unforgettable par 4, have them clamoring to return to Myrtle Beach, America’s most popular golf destination.
Tidewater has been ranked among the nation’s top public courses since its 1990 opening and the layout is highlighted by eight holes that play along either Cherry Grove or the Intracoastal Waterway, perhaps none more memorably than No. 4.

The challenge of this 430-yard two-shotter is matched only by its beauty. A gentle dogleg left, No. 4 plays along Cherry Grove from tee to green, offering a stunning view of the tidal waters, but golfers can’t get distracted by the scenery.
The hole, known as Futch Site, provides players a decision on the tee. Golfers that want to be aggressive can play to the left side of the fairway, shortening the hole and providing a greater opportunity for roll as the fairway tumbles downward. Go too far left and a marshy grave awaits.

Golfers that opt to take a more conservative approach can play to the right-center of the fairway, setting up a longer approach to a green surrounded by five bunkers. The approach, often off a downhill lie, is among the most daunting along the Myrtle Beach golf scene because the cavernous bunkers that front the green are best avoided.
Reaching the green, which slopes from back to front, is hardly a guarantee of success. The putting surface is large and fast.
Tidewater’s fourth hole is the layout’s No. 1 handicap and it has earned that distinction, but it’s also what makes the course so memorable

This is an Instagram worthy challenge that golfers tell their friends about long after they’ve returned home.
