If you’ve been to Tidewater in the last 20 years, there is a good chance you’ve met Shannon, our most popular staff member.
A native of Darlington, S.C., she started working the bev cart at Tidewater in 1995, and her near-constant smile and vivacious personality have brightened many bogey-filled days.
With the spring season upon us, we sat down for a Q&A with Shannon.
This October will be your 23rd year at Tidewater, what has kept you at the course so long?
My coworkers. We are like family, and I like staying busy and keeping active.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
I love interacting with people and getting to know people from other parts of the world. I’m a people person so I can carry on a conversation easily.
What’s the craziest thing you’ve seen on the course?
I’ve seen a few carts in the water, guys in the water with their (shirt off), (guys) diving in (the water) to cool off in the middle of the summer. Some get just enough drinks in them to want to cool off!
Who are your favorite golfers?
I like the ones who are happy, and the ones that aren’t, I make them happy. A little bit of kindness goes a long way. When they are having a bad round, give them a smile and some conversation and they are alright.
How did you get started at Tidewater?
I was a cocktail waitress prior to (starting here) and one of my regular customers was the food and beverage manager at Tidewater. She offered me a day time job because I was working 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. She hired me here in 1995, she left in ‘97 and I ended up getting her position. We have continued to be best friends. I’ve got so many friends throughout the years I’ve met through Tidewater. We are like family here.
